The OSCA Way

The OSCA Way at Ormiston Sandwell Community Academy is a set of guidelines and practices designed to create an environment where learning can thrive. By having clear routines and rules the school helps students focus, engage and succeed. These strategies ensure consistency which can lead to a more positive and productive educational experience.

SET

SET has been designed as a way of securing students’ attention at any point in the lesson when the teacher needs to talk to the whole class (to give instructions; explain something; take feedback etc). The expectation is for students to be Silent, Engaged and Tracking the speaker by the time the teacher has counted down from three, finishing with ‘set’. To find our more and see SET in action, please click the link. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uTcYoXxxKA&t=2s

Three to Start

Three to start is a procedure used by teachers at the beginning of every lesson. Students know what to expect as they walk into every classroom. They should walk to their seat quickly and calmly and get all of their equipment out. The teacher will provide students with a ‘Do Now’ activity which they can start straight away. This will focus on retrieving knowledge, skills and understanding from previous lessons and help them to settle into the lesson. Three to End

Three to end is used at the end of each lesson, by all teachers throughout the academy. Teachers will inform students of any end of lesson instructions, and then students will pack away quietly and stand behind their desks until they are dismissed.
