Subject Aims/Intent:
The Design and Technology curriculum offers our students the opportunity to develop an awareness of design in our society, together with skills to design and make quality products which are fit for purpose. We encourage active learning and we foster innovation and creativity during lessons. In all our lessons we stress the need for safety, accuracy and quality when using tools and equipment. In key stage three, our students will work on a range of design and make activities intended to stretch their abilities and build their knowledge, understanding and skills of the subject.
During KS3 students follow the curriculum on a carousel developing their skills and knowledge in the areas of Food, Textiles, Graphics and Product Design.
Year 7: Students undertake a series of projects working to a given brief, that explore researching, designing, creating and evaluating. In Graphics students produce candle jar labels and mobile phone cases. In Textiles: felt animal keyrings. In Product Design: drinks packaging and puzzles. In Food: healthy eating – back to basics.
Year 8: Students undertake a series of projects working to a given brief, that explore researching, designing, creating and evaluating. In Graphics students produce digital calendars and invitations. In Textiles: sustainable shopping bags. In Product Design: tea light holders and robots. In Food: healthy eating – back to basics.
In key stage four, our students have the opportunity to specialise in 3D Art, Art Textiles and Food & Nutrition. Through the use of our well-equipped design studios, ICT suites, workshop and food technology room, our students gain a greater understanding of the subject. We encourage students to develop learning and thinking skills through design projects and discussions of issues affecting the design of products in our society and the wider world.

KO’s: Our knowledge organisers feature within a homework booklet that is given to students at the beginning of the academic year. These are referenced at home with homework tasks linking to the key knowledge and skills embedded in lessons. Knowledge retrieval from homework tasks is tested within lessons. Please see link in homework section to view our homework booklet.
Assessment:
All assessment completed in Design and Technology is in line with the whole school assessment policy. Students are assessed against three specific objectives: researching, designing and making. Marking is completed regularly to include both formative and summative assessment methods; verbal feedback, coded marking and self/peer assessment all of which enable the students to meet/exceed their own targets.
Homework: homework plans:
Homework is set on a fortnightly basis in Technology using our Creative Arts & Technology homework booklets.
Extra-Curricular, curriculum experiences:
In Design and Technology, we offer opportunities for enrichment for our students through a range of clubs, trips and competitions. These opportunities provide those who are interested in design and technology subject areas with a range of experiences to help focus their skills, knowledge and experiences.
