Letter - Year 11 Tutor Groups

New Year 11 Tutor Group Arrangements – September 2016

Dear Parent/ Carer,

As you will be aware, your child is about to embark upon one of the most important years of their education so far. It is the year when all external exams will be sat and every lesson and every intervention we make during this year will lead towards them. It is also a year of real pressure for our young people and we are constantly seeking ways to help them manage this pressure. our aim is to continue to work closely with parents and carers to together support and guide them to the best they can achieve.

Over the last 6 years OSCA has placed students into our very successful Vertical tutoring system. However, increasingly over the last few years our year 11 students have been withdrawn from L4S and tutor groups to participate in additional interventions. This has meant that year 11 students have at times faced disruption to their timetable in their most stressful year. To alleviate this stress, and to allow all year 11 students to access appropriate interventions and maximise the use of curriculum time, we have made the decision to create new year 11 exclusive tutor groups. Each of these groups will have one of our senior leaders or lead practitioners as their personal tutors. These experienced members of staff teach across the Core and Ebacc subjects and will be able to provide students with personalised support. Each student has been placed in a tutor group based on the latest progress data available and linked to a subject in which they currently need to improve. This will of course will be reviewed and adapted throughout the year to ensure our interventions remain purposeful for all involved. Whilst we understand that leaving their current tutor may cause some upset for a handful of students we hope you will understand our rationale and support us in moving to this new system which will offer more support to your child.

Students will remain members of their current house groups, and any pastoral issues or questions should still go via your child’s current house team, who will remain as your first point of contact, so the excellent level of pastoral support they have always enjoyed will remain the same, but with enhanced academic support from a bespoke team of tutors.

Year 11 students will also continue to access our L4S programme, which can now be made more relevant to the needs of year 11 focusing on study skills, careers guidance and planning for the future. Year 11 will also continue to have L4S Days to support their personal development.

If you have any questions or queries regarding the above, or would like to know more about the new tutor group system please do not hesitate to contact us via the academy.

We look forward to working with you next academic year to ensure all of our year 11 students achieve their very best.
