Ormiston Sandwell Community Academy

Information for Parents/Guardians

Dear Parent/Guardian,

As you know we take health and safety very seriously at our academy. We live in complex times, and need to be prepared for all eventualities. One new policy we have had to develop, in light of national and international events, is a lockdown policy. Essentially, this is to cover highly unlikely, but of course not impossible events, to be sure we are ready to react if required. These events might include: A reported incident or civil disturbance in the local area which potentially poses a risk to the academy community; a dangerous individual in the locality; an intruder on the academy site with the potential to pose a risk to students, staff and visitors; or a warning being received regarding a local risk of air pollution (e.g. smoke plume, gas cloud) etc.

To that end, we are planning this afternoon a practice drill with staff and students. I stress this will be a practice, and we have no safety concerns at all.

We will explain to the students in advance today why we are doing this, so they do not become alarmed. We will evaluate how it goes, and do an annual practice to ensure everything runs smoothly going forward. Please do contact your child’s house team if you wish to clarify anything.

Best wishes,

Ms McMahon
