Exam Season Letter - May 2016

Dear Parent/ Carer,

You will be aware that the exam season is now in full swing. We are extremely proud of our year 11 cohort, and the mature way that they have conducted their revision and exams so far. I am writing to you today to explain the examination leave arrangements for Year 11.

As you will be aware from your child and through meetings with their teachers, the GCSE examinations over recent years have become more challenging both in their content and in the changing grade boundaries that have risen. This means students have to perform even better in exams to reach their expected grades than in previous years.

In order to help your child to reach their potential OSCA has changing its approach to the traditional study leave. Students will remain in school until the bulk of their exams are completed (date to be confirmed).

During this time we will of course offer the highest support to our students, and ensure lesson time is focussed on revision and study for each exam. Once exams are completed in a particular subject we will use the lesson time to focus on other subjects. So for example, now that English language exams are completed students will use English lesson time to prepare for English Literature exams later in the month. We will also be providing quiet study spaces for students before exams, and some timings of the day will become more flexible to allow students to prepare fully.

  • We will continue to hold extra revision sessions ‘Exam Crams’ before each exam. These take place at 8.15am before morning exams, and 12.20pm before afternoon exams. There are links below with details of the next two weeks of exams alongside details of Exam Crams to help with planning.
  • We are also providing all year 11 students who have a morning exam with a free breakfast from the dining area from 7.50am onwards.
  • Students should continue to wear full academy uniform at all times when attending the academy. However, we will offer a ‘blazer amnesty’ from Friday 27th May – any year 11 student can attend the academy without a blazer after this date if they are willing to donate their blazer to the school for use by students lower down the school. We will be extremely grateful for any donations and these can be submitted to the student hub from this date. Students will be given an ‘amnesty card’ to enable them to be blazer free thereafter!

We will hold our Leavers Assembly on Wednesday 29th June.  I do hope that you are able to join us in celebrating the many accomplishments of our students over the last 5 years here at OSCA.  Details of this event will follow nearer the day.

Our students are a credit to the academy, and to you as parents. We wish them the very best of luck, and hope they achieve the great results they deserve in August. Many thanks in advance for your continued support at this very demanding time for year 11 students. They have given of their very best all year, and I am confident they will get through this final hurdle with flying colours.  Please do contact us if you require any further information.
