Ormiston Sandwell Community Academy

The library provides the focal point for independent research within the Academy’s community. All of theLRC students upon enrolment, become members of the library, which holds an extensive range of study support materials, the latest books to read for pleasure, and includes a suite of twenty-eight computers with internet access. All of the library’s resources are available to view online via the Academy ICT network. There is also an additional Key Stage 3 Library which can be utilised by classes throughout the Academy day.

The library provides a friendly, supportive environment where the Learning Resources Manager and Student Librarians are at hand to assist students. The library is open to sixth formers throughout the Academy day, whilst Year Groups 7 through to 11, have free access to the library and computer suite at break and lunchtimes on their allocated week day. Students may borrow up to three books at a time for a period of two weeks, after which time, books may be renewed. Sixth Form students have access to a further section of the library which houses books with more adult themes.

New students take part in a Library Induction programme where they learn to navigate the library and develop their literary appreciation skills, and there are further opportunities to explore Information Literacy techniques to help support their studies across all areas of the Academy curriculum.

The library works in conjunction with the Academy’s Careers Co-ordinator and the Connexions service, to provide up to the minute advice and resources on employment, education, and training opportunities. There is help and advice for all, from Year 7 upwards, and a selection of careers resources can be viewed in the library.

An exciting series of library events and clubs run as publicised which include a book club, World Book Day celebrations and the shadowing of the Cilip Carnegie Children’s Book Award. If students have a book or author they would like to recommend, they are encouraged to submit reviews and articles to be displayed in the library.
