Speak Out!

On Monday 26th March 2018, OSCA's Year 10 students took part in The Speakers Trust "SpeakOut" Challenge.

Speakers Trust is the UK’s leading public speaking and communication skills training charity, with the vision of enabling every young person to speak confidently and be heard. Year 10 took part in a day of workshops that aimed to enhance their speaking and communication skills by giving them the confidence to transform their thoughts into speech. Across the course of the day students developed the skills to structure and deliver a 2 minute speech on a topic of their choice - students spoke about a vast array of topics including feminism, the importance of video games, family, and 'a perfect society'. The day culminated in each student delivering their speech to their group, which took a great deal of bravery and courage. The winners from each group were: Lucy, Aimee, Chloe, Joshua, Georgina, Benjamin, and Selinda. Our finalists will go on to deliver their speech in an Assembly Final after Easter, with the winner entering the Regional Final - to be held at a local university this summer. This was an invaluable experience for our students, who developed a real confidence, and reaped the rewards of challenging themselves to do something a little bit scary! Well done all!
A few of our favourite student comments:
''Absolutely fabulous! I was sceptical at the start, but as the day continued, I enjoyed it so much, and it improved my confidence immensely!"

"I would totally recommend this experience as I've learnt a lot about myself and gained confidence"
"The SpeakOut Challenge has helped me have the confidence to speak in front of a crowd of people even if I am petrified to do so!"

"The trainer was extremely helpful and kind; she gave us confidence without forcing us into speaking. She gave us an easy to understand structure for making speeches and I will definitely use it later in life"
