Letter to Parents - Road Safety

Dear Parent/Guardian,

I am writing to you to ask for your support in speaking to your son/daughter about the following issue. We have, over the last few days, had several concerns raised by parents and passers- by about extremely unsafe behaviour, both on the main New Birmingham Road and other neighbouring roads, as our students have been travelling to and from the Academy. In fact, it was reported that two girls were almost run over last night due to not paying attention crossing the road.

In response to this, and in an attempt to ensure the safety of our students, senior members of staff have been monitoring the situation and offering support and guidance. Unfortunately, a small number of students have not carried out their instructions, making the situation even more difficult. Clearly, we are not trained in road crossing, and are only seeking to help. Ultimately, students must take responsibility for their own safety, hence us asking you to reiterate its importance.

As I am sure you will agree the prospect of any one of our students being seriously injured or worse due to failure to follow simple road safety rules, or the advice of staff, is the last thing anyone of us want. So may I please request that you reinforce the message that has been shared with all our students today and in assemblies. That is, when crossing the road, they should be sensible, aware of the traffic, and cross safely obeying traffic and crossing signals.

I would also like to draw your attention to the behaviour policy on our website that clearly states, ‘Students are ambassadors of our academy even when off academy premises and we expect them to act accordingly.’ This includes obeying academy rules and listening to and following instructions given by staff when travelling to or from the academy, or near the academy premises.

Many thanks as always for your ongoing support in this matter.

Kind regards

Gaynor Garner
