Principal's Letter to Parents - Autumn 2015

October 2015

Dear Parent/Guardian,

I wanted to update you on events and progress at OSCA as this half term draws to a close. And what an enjoyable half term it’s been!

We started the term off in style, celebrating our best 6th form results ever, our highest ever academic GCSE results, and the fact that our year 11 had doubled the % of the elite A*/A grades achieved too! In true OSCA spirit though, we are not complacent, and have continued to raise the bar and our expectations of students again this year.  We were the highest performing school on attendance in the whole of Sandwell last year for the second consecutive year, and one of the highest performing in the whole country!

We have set even higher targets for achievement and attendance this year though, and again I would like to thank parents and families for all your support on this. Every year, when we do an analysis of results, we find the highest achievers are also the highest attenders. So, being here every day, on time, well equipped, smartly dressed and ready to learn, really does pay off in terms of success.

Alongside all the hard graft, we have managed to have a bit of fun and some adventures too - please see the attached newsletter for just some of the great things that have happened this half term, as well as some key dates.

And finally, OSCA’s popularity continues to grow in the community. As you may know we are full and oversubscribed in years 7 and 8, with a waiting list for places, for the second consecutive year. With a half term under their belt now, the year 7 are shaping up to be our brightest, biggest, and best year group ever! Furthermore, we hosted an exceptionally popular open evening in September for year 6 students and their families. Attendance was fantastic- our highest ever number of families came to visit.

The verbal and written feedback from prospective students and parents alike was superb. In response to the question ‘What three words would you use to describe OSCA?’ descriptions included:

  • Mind Blowing/Brilliant /Bright
  • Exciting / Modern/ Friendly
  • Improved / Positive/ Welcoming
  • Fun / Respect/Happy
  • Enthusiastic/Smart / High Expectations
  • Enjoyable / Super/Outstanding
  • Very helpful/polite staff and students
  • Caring / Amazing/ Approachable
  • Innovative / Educational /Brilliant
  • Vibrant /Incredible/ Warm
  • Smashing / Excellent/ Helpful
  • Interesting / Upcoming/Lovely
  • Inspiring /Knowledgeable/Impressive ethos
  • Impressive / Organised/ Explanatory
  • Fantastic / Inviting/ Students Positive

It is fair to say therefore that competition for places is likely to continue to be fierce in 2016.

So, a big thank from me once again for all your support this half term, and best wishes for a happy and enjoyable half term week.

Yours faithfully

Marie McMahon
